Four Ways to Monitor the Condition of your Alignment:

1. Your steering wheel should be reasonably centered when alignment job is performed. If wheel position changes (while driving on a straight road) then the alignment may be off and vehicle should be checked immediately.

2. The vehicle should not pull either to the right or left when you let go of the steering wheel around 30-40 mph. If vehicle begins to pull there may be a misalignment condition and should be checked immediately. Directional pull may be a result of camber, caster, and / or radial tire pull.

3. When car is parked, turn the wheel completely (right or left) for a full view of the tire and look for irregular wear pattern. If wear has occured, then the alignment should be checked immediately

4. Scuffing or tread is extremely destructive. Occasinally run your hand across the tread of the tire inward (toward the engine) and outward to determine if scuffing is occurring. Any sharp or feathered edges feld in either direction indicates a possible misalignment and should be checked immediately.

Alignment Definition and Diagrams:

Camber: The inward or outward tilt of the whell at the top from a vertical position.



Caster: The forward or backward tilt of steering axis (centir line of the balljoints, kingpins, or struts). When the wheel load is leading you have positive caster. When the wheel load is trailing you have negative caster.



Toe: The difference between the center line of a tire at front edge vs. the back edge of the front tires.
  • Toe In: When the distance of the back of the tire is greater that the front of the tire.
  • Toe Out: When the distance of the back of the tire is less than the front of the tire.
